Surfing and Kayaking
Take advantage of Cornwall's stunning coastal location and indulge in a spot of water-based activity.
Cornwall is well known for some of the finest surfing beaches in Europe, as well as for its laid-back surfing culture, and there are plenty of schools which can give you a few pointers if you're new to the sport and need a confidence boost. The Gwithian Academy of Surfing provides group, private or one-to-one sessions for every ability, whether you've never set foot on a surfboard or just want to brush up on your technique, and depending on conditions this can be a lovely, mellow beginner's wave. Never mind if you don't own a set of love beads or are over the age of 60; surfing is a non-discriminatory pastime that can be enjoyed by anyone, and there are few things more fun when holidaying with a group of friends.
If you fancy going it alone you can hire all the equipment you'll need here too, but remember to be aware of conditions and know what the flags mean.
Poltair Holiday Barns offers free kayaking for guests; we have two kayaks and annual membership at Stithians Lake for you to take advantage of. If you haven't ventured down to Stithians Lake yet then we strongly recommend a visit; the Outdoor and Active Centre is an outstanding facility that caters to a myriad of outdoor activities including sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, archery and climbing and there's a children's play area, as well as a "trim trail" and cycle trails. Even if you just want to take a gentle stroll and try a spot of bird-watching, there are few more tranquil surroundings in which to do so, and with a lovely cafe and plenty of events (for everyone from stag and hen parties to birthday blowouts) there really is a wealth of diversity here.
