Cornwall is becoming famed for its superb cuisine, and we've noted some of our favourite local restaurants below for when you really feel like treating yourself.
Carn Brea Castle
Ever visited a restaurant where the chef serenades you? That's what happens at Carn Brea Castle, a quirky restaurant serving authentic middle-Eastern cuisine and run by the Jordanian Mounir family.
There will rarely be a more romantic setting for dinner than this 14th Century hunting lodge, much of which is still without electricity, meaning a candlelit meal to remember. Winner of a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence, the restaurant serves gorgeous food cooked fresh to order, and if you're lucky enough to be treated to a musical rendition from the owner as you dine, you really will have ticked another "must-do" off your list!
The Gurnard's Head
We couldn't publish a restaurant page without mentioning this outstanding, award-winning foodie pub nestled in the wilds of Zennor. Why not take a bracing walk out to Gurnard's Head itself before returning to the pub with its roaring log fire and settling down to a draught ale or cider, a brandy from their superb collection or even just a foaming hot chocolate? Next, retire to the restaurant for a mouth-watering lunch or supper followed by one of their sublime desserts. (Dark-chocolate terrine with popcorn ice-cream, anyone?)
If you don't make it to Zennor this trip but find yourself in the iconic fishing harbour of Mousehole, check out the Gurnard's (also award-winning) sister pub, The Old Coastguard. Heavenly.
No introduction is needed to the work of this celebrity chef - take your pick from one of Rick Stein's four restaurants in Padstow, his pub in St Merryn or his eaterie in Falmouth. Most famous for delectable, fresh fish, Stein's chef's also know their way around a well-aged steak, a hearty breakfast or a home-made cake. Relaxed, stylish interiors (designed by Rick's wife Jill) are the perfect settings in which to enjoy the menus created by this renowned, award-winning chef and food writer.
Talking of celebrities, most people are acquainted with this fabulous project begun by well-loved chef and philanthropist Jamie Oliver. Situated on rugged, picturesque Watergate Bay, and showcasing a menu typical of Oliver's signature style of rustic, Italian-inspired fayre, Fifteen Cornwall is a registered charity that works to give disadvantaged young people in Cornwall an opportunity to develop their potential. The food is second-to-none and the atmosphere characteristic of Jamie Oliver's laid-back, contemporary approach. Highly recommended.
Esteemed amongst locals and holiday-makers alike, and acclaimed for the superb quality of food and generous portion sizes, the famous Trevaskis Farmhouse Kitchen Restaurant caters for all tastes, so whether you're after a satisfying "Full Trevaskis" breakfast, a renowned Sunday roast (booking recommended!) or a mediterranean-style mezze washed down with a fine international wine or a local beer, you can be assured of a delectable meal using the freshest ingredients (most of which are, of course, sourced from the farm itself).
